Looking for suitable employment is time-consuming! It involves job searches from different sources, submissions of CV’s and attending interviews. Even though this process can be overwhelming it does not have to be. The job-market is ever-changing and you need to familiarise yourself with the latest employment trends.

WHERE ARE VACANCIES ADVERTISED?

With continual advances being made in on-line technology and with Social Networking sites (Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn etc) the internet is currently the best place to search for employment. It is interactive and is updated on a regular basis. Even though the INTERNET is a great tool: “Remember that many companies only use Print Media to advertise their vacancies ”

Process involved in looking for employment

New positions are posted on the internet and in print on a daily basis so you need to log onto different sites (including Corporate Sites as many companies advertise their vacancies on their own Websites) and screen the print-press on a daily basis.

  • Identify the medium(s) that best suits your career choice (many magazines & websites are very industry specific for example, Bizcommunity.com is very Media orientated and IT-Online is very Technology orientated, Mining News, Jobmail. PNet, Career Junction all specialize in different industries); etc.
  • Make sure you subscribe to newsletters on the identified sites;
  • Given the option to subscribe to RSS-feeds make sure you subscribe (the various sites will then notify you of new vacancies and industry related news);
  • Subscribe to Job Alerts on the identified sites;
  • Upload your CV on various website – remember to upload your professional CV and (where possible) not to use job site CV templates;
  • Identify recruitment agents that specialize in the industry you are interested in and build a relationship with the selected agents/recruiters;

Don’t sit back and wait for people to contact you – be vigilant in your approach and remember that sending out one CV to the same agent for different positions tells that recruiter/company that you have NO idea what you want to do with your life. Stay consistent…
